Symonds Yat

Day 9: Ross - Goodrich - Symonds Yat - Monmouth

We stayed in "Yew Tree Cottage" that night in Ross and enjoyed the generous hospitality of the wonderful landlady. After a good night of sleep and a wonderful breakfast made by her, we start walking to Monmouth. It was a wonderful day, the best summer day we were going to have, a real hot summer's day!

The four of us walked through woods, over hills, bridges, along the riverside in the direction of Monmouth. We stopped at Goodrich castle, had coffees in the sun at a pub. We stopped at the church before Symond's Yat and lay down there for an hour or more. We climbed Symond's Yat Rock and enjoyed the wonderful views on the river and had lunch there, ice cream and coffees.

Wild garlic, hummmmm It started to get dark before we entered Monmouth, the lights on the Wye bridge at Monmouth were already on when we arrived there.

After baths and a change of clothes we had a wonderful Welsh dinner at Nick Frost's place. We were all a little excited, we had made it so far, about 180 miles in 9 days under very difficult circumstances because of the flooding of the river just before our trip. Now one more day and about 20 miles to walk and we had done the complete trip. We didn't realise at that time that that last day would be one of the most beautiful but also one of the most difficult days.
