The Queen Visits Hereford

God Save the Queen!

<bgsound src="images/queen.mid" volume="50"> Hundreds of loyal subjects assembled outside the Cathedral to welcome the Queen on the fourth visit of her reign to Hereford, on Friday May 3rd 1996. Accompanied by HRH Prince Philip, Her Majesty visited the Mappa Mundi Exhibition and medieval Chained Library, now housed in the prestigious new library building and later attended a service of dedication in the Cathedral. This was followed by lunch at the Town Hall as the guest of the Mayor and Corporation of Hereford. On her way to the Town Hall, the Queen paused in High Town to meet with some of the many townsfolk and visitors who had gathered to watch the spectacle.

While the Queen attended lunch, the Royal Standard was raised over the Town Hall where it waved majestically against a clear blue sky. Before leaving, Her Majesty unveiled a commemorative plaque in the presence of the assembled civic leaders and citizens.

The flawless proceedings throughout the day were a credit to the officers of the Cathedral, Council and Police who were involved in the organisation and management of the visit. Restrained but effective security allowed many the opportunity to see the Queen at close quarters on this memorable occasion.
